Thousands feared dead in devastating Venezuela earthquake – what we know

  • The death toll from two earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday has increased to 164, with over 900 people reported injured.
  • Interim president Delcy Rodriguez declared a state of emergency after the quakes caused building collapses in Caracas and forced the closure of the country’s main international airport.
  • Two earthquakes, measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, hit within 39 seconds of each other on Wednesday evening, leading to widespread damage in the capital.
  • Several multi-storey buildings collapsed, trapping people under the rubble and prompting rescue teams to search for survivors.
  • The US Geological Survey estimated a 44 per cent probability that the number of fatalities could exceed 10,000.
