Thomas Tuchel's Diego Maradona highlights Chelsea’s golden trio next owner has to build around

It reflects the incredibly high levels of performance Mason Mount has achieved, and only at the age of 23 that this season felt a little lower than his player of the season campaign in 2020/21.

With 20 goals and 21 assists since the start of last season, Mount is alongside Harry Kane for one of just two Englishmen playing for a Premier League side to achieve those influential numbers. His wider numbers from Tuesday night's Champions League classic against Real Madrid only paints a more impressive picture.

100 per cent tackles won, 100 per cent long ball accuracy, 82 per cent pass accuracy, with 63 touches, four chances created, and a goal and assist.

His brilliant right-footed strike in the 15th minute ignited Chelsea's evening and simultaneously placed Mount in astonishing company. As picked out by stats guru Duncan Alexander after the goal went in, Mason Mount has now scored more European Cup goals than Diego Maradona.

It is only the latest in a series of stats that showcase Mount's meteoric rise from Cobham standout to a guaranteed first-team starter.

The opening strike came off the back of his standout performance at St. Mary's Stadium at the weekend, where he scored two goals and got an assist in Chelsea's 6-0 win over Southampton. Isolating it down to this season, Mount has 11 goals, 14 assists and has won seven man of the match awards, highlighting his influence on Tuchel's play.

But he is not the only young star on Tuesday Chelsea fans were excited about. Along with Mount, Reece James and Kai Havertz also provided optimism with standout performances across the two legs against Real Madrid.

Although Kai Havertz will rue his missed chance in extra time, his goal last week gave the Blues some hope heading into the second leg and is continuing to prove the player capable of leading the line for Chelsea. With six goals in his last seven appearances, Havertz is quickly finding the productivity needed after early struggles in the Premier League.

Reece James' defensive display up against Vinicius Jnr was exceptional, particularly after picking up an early yellow card from referee Szymon Marciniak. The English defender has been one of Chelsea's standout performers this season. The main frustration comes from the injury issues that have prevented him from featuring in 20 league games this term.

As Chelsea's new ownership beckons, the golden trio, all under the age of 24, provide the beginning of a spine to build from in the coming years under Thomas Tuchel. These three were all key in the Champions League final last May and are quickly proving invaluable.

Suppose you add a returning Conor Gallagher, Levi Colwill, Armando Broja and Billy Gilmour, just to name a few of the Blues youngsters out on loan. In that case, the future looks extremely bright with Tuchel at the helm. The next owners cannot waste this opportunity.
