Thomas Tuchel may be 'forced to leave UK' as Chelsea sacking creates visa limbo

Thomas Tuchel could reportedly be forced to leave the UK with the former Chelsea manager's visa status up in the air.

The German was appointed in 2021 by then-owner Roman Abramovich and won the Champions League in his first season. However, despite sanctioning more than £250m in summer spending, new chief Todd Boehly opted to sack Tuchel just weeks into the new season.

While new manager Graham Potter uses the international break to continue his preparations for a first Premier League game in charge, it's a different story from Tuchel. Indeed, according to new reports, the 49-year-old is still seeking clarity over how soon he may be required to leave the UK.

According to The Telegraph, Tuchel arrived on a post-Brexit Governing Body Endorsement visa and might therefore only have 90 days to remain in the country after his sacking. The situation remains unclear, though, with the same report noting he was one of the first foreign managers to join a Premier League club after the post-Brexit rules came into force.

“We will act in accordance with UK rules and adapt all future plans," a representative for Tuchel told The Telegraph. "Final decisions are not made yet.”

For the time being, the manager continues to live in the UK, while his children are at school in Surrey, and he is reported to be happy in the UK. At the time of writing, neither the Home Office nor the Football Association has provided further details on his situation.

“This is one of the most difficult statements I have ever had to write - and it is one which I hoped I would not need to do for many years," Tuchel wrote in his first statement after being sacked by the Blues. "I am devastated that my time at Chelsea has come to an end.

“This is a club where I felt at home, both professionally and personally. Thank you so much to all the staff, the players and the supporters for making me feel very welcome from the start.

“The pride and joy I felt at helping the team to win the Champions League and the Club World Cup will stay with me forever. I am honoured to have been a part of this club’s history and the memories of the last 19 months will always have a special place in my heart.”

Potter's first game in the league will come on October, with the London club set for a derby away at Crystal Palace. After picking up 10 points in six games with Tuchel at the helm, they sit seventh in the table - three points adrift of Potter's former club Brighton in fourth spot.
