Thomas Frank delivers Nicolas Jover verdict as Brentford boss calls for Arsenal lesson

Brentford boss Thomas Frank wants his side to learn from set-piece masters Arsenal.

The Gunners beat Brentford 3-1 on New Year’s Day to go second in the Premier League and, once again, their set-pieces were vital.

Mikel Merino fired the ball home from a corner early in the second-half when the two sides were locked at 1-1.

Arsenal kicked on from there, with Gabriel Martinelli adding a third goal swiftly after Merino's effort, and the visitors eventually ran out 3-1 winners.

“The three big moments in the game, we didn’t do perfect,” said Frank. “We need to do better with the first goal.

“The second one, we know they are good at set-pieces. We actually only gave three corners away, which is the fewest corners we have given away in three years in the Premier League against Arsenal. So there’s a paradox in that.

“I need to look more into detail what we could have done better, but I also need to acknowledge they are very good at it. We need to learn from the best.

“I need to look more into it, but they are very good at it and it’s something we need to learn from.”

Arsenal were unrivalled in their set-piece prowess last year, scoring 16 Premier League goals from corners in 2024.

Set-piece coach Nicolas Jover, who used to work at Brentford, has been credited with much of their success and Frank is not surprised that he is having such an impact at Arsenal.

“I think like any coach, or any individual person that strives for perfection, he works hard every day,” said Frank.

“He analyses things well, is innovative. So he is always adjusting the blueprint to be perfect - and it looks quite perfect in this moment in time.

“But then I think it is that relentless consistency in the messages and the small details that they nail every single time.”
