A research report released on Wednesday warns that this year's El Nino and the record global heat it is driving, alongside severe droughts, wildfires and shrinking water supplies, could cause almost half a million additional deaths across the globe by the end of February.
The University of Chicago-based Climate Impact Lab indicates that up to 451,000 extra heat-related fatalities between June and the end of February could be linked to El Nino, compared with heat deaths expected in a typical year.
