This Morning chef Phil Vickery asks if Welsh McDonald's 'world best' accolade is an April fool

ITV morning show This Morning visited the now pretty famous McDonald's in Welshpool, which has been named the best Mcdonald's in the world by two Michelin star chef Welsh Gareth Ward, much to the despair of their resident chef Phil Vickery. Asking if the segment was an April's fools joke, Phil looked on bemused while presenter David Blackmore was sent to Wales to try out the McDonald's.

Speaking about the Mcdonald's Gareth, who heads up Ynyshir in Machynlleth, Wales' first restaurant to get two Michelin stars and is UK Chef of the Year as per The Staff Canteen Awards, told WalesOnline: "Welshpool McDonald's. I'm telling you now, Welshpool McDonald's is on a different level. It's just got different [elements] to everyone else. [It's] just absolutely smashing it. Last time I had a crispy chicken and it definitely had [something like] truffle mayonnaise on it. I don't think it did, but it tasted like it did. Everybody I speak to says this is, by far, the best McDonald's in the world. Welshpool McDonald's that's what it's all about."

After arriving in Welshpool and chatting to the McDonald's manager Jack Payton and trying some of the food, David said the restaurant was a "superior Maccy D's" with great staff service and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. While hosts Dermot O'Leary and Josie Gibson chatted to Jack, Phil could be seen looking on with his head in his hands.

Phil, who has been a TV chef for two decades and regularly appears on This Morning, admitted he had not been to a McDonald's for 27 years and asked if it was an April fool's joke. He said: "I haven't eaten a McDonald's in 27 years...but my daughters love it."

After David's segment Phil added: "Can I just say was that April the first? Was that April the first?"

WalesOnline has also put Gareth's bold claim to the test by sending a reporter to try this now-famous McDonald's and left very impressed. Anna Lewis reported: "So, is it the best McDonald's in the world? I'm definitely not qualified to be the judge of that, but I for one was impressed. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's probably the best McDonald's I've had - I'm not sure by how much as I imagine there's not a huge amount that sets them all apart, but the small touches went a long way. And if one of Wales' best chefs can grab a bite there after what I can only guess must be some pretty marathon shifts, I wouldn't blame him."
