This Is Going To Hurt’s Ambika Mod cast as lead in TV adaption of One Day

We loved her in This Is Going To Hurt – and now she’s back to grace our screens once again.

Ambika Mod, who played tragic junior doctor Shruti in the BBC adaption of Adam Kay’s bestselling book, will be heading back to our screens as part of the Netflix adaption of One Day.

It isn’t the first time David Nicholls bestselling book had been adapted for the screen. Think back to the film with Anne Hathaway’s bad Yorkshire accent: that’s it.

Mod will be playing the lead role of Emma Morley, opposite Leo Woodall as Dexter Mayhew in the romantic comi-tragedy. Woodall might be best known for his appearance as recurring character Jack in last year’s The White Lotus.

Published in 2009, Nicholls’ book followed the lives of Emma and Dexter across the years, focusing on what they get up to on St Swithin’s Day, the 15 July, across two decades.

Though the pair originally start as friends, and a series of coincidences stop them from being together, they eventually become romantically involved.

The synopsis reads: “It’s 1988 and Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley have only just met. They both know that the next day, after college graduation, they must go their separate ways. But after only one day together, they cannot stop thinking about one another…

“Dex and Em face squabbles and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears. And as the true meaning of this one crucial day is revealed, they must come to grips with the nature of love and life itself.”

Though not much is known about the TV adaption so far, it is being produced by Netflix and the writing team is being led by the BAFTA-award winning Nicole Taylor, whose writing credits include TV dramas Three Girls and The Nest, and the film Wild Rose, starring Jessie Buckley.

The team behind the series should be hoping for good things: the film adaption, which was released in 2011 and starred Hathaway opposite (the English) Jim Sturgess as Dexter, raked in $59 million at the box office.

And of course, fans are already weighing in on the news.

“I’ll get my tear ducts ready,” one wrote, while another commented: “Ah such lovely casting.”

It seems like Mod is in hot demand: in addition to being cast in One Day, she has also just finished filming for the sequel to Billie Piper’s series I Hate Suzie, which is set to release around Christmas.

Though there’s no release date yet, we’re crossing our fingers for July 15 next year: wouldn’t that be nice?
