Delicate and beachy, shell nails just became summer 2026's must-have genre of manicure

A collage of shell-like manicures: on the left is a hand with milky white nails by manicurist Julia Diogo (@paintedbyjools), followed by a hand with pale yellow nails and a hand with pink and blue sheer iridescent nails, by nail artist Mateja Novakovic (@matejanova). While summer typically calls for vibrant, juicy shades and aquatic blues, 2026 is welcoming another, more understated style of manicure into the fold - and though on the subtler side, shell nails still possess equal levels of summeriness.

This season is not one that often surprises us in the manicure department. It's typically a given that fiery coral shades will make their return, along with statement spritz nails, but so far, summer 2026's nail trends are already subverting our expectations, in the form of very soft and sheer shades, like coconut cream nails and luxe pearl nails. The latter, in fact, is one of several seashell-inspired shades and designs we've been seeing, so much so that it looks set to become quite a consistent theme this season. Think pale yellows, oyster-like pearly shades and glossy finishes that look reminiscent of sea-splashed cowry shells.

So, if you're looking for a more individual take on classic pastels and milky nail polish, or want a very glamorous, pearly design to wear on your summer holiday, here's an array of shell nail ideas to consider - along with chic polishes to help easily recreate them at home.

Why pale and shimmery shell nails are the perfect pick for summer

As far as we're concerned, shell nails can be interpreted in several ways. A pastel yellow, for instance, like Manucurist's aptly named 'Shell' shade, is a lovely option. As is a soft, sea-foamy white because it's a very classic seashell colour. These are both great picks if you prefer very subtle manicures and just want to wear a shade that quietly toasts the season whilst remaining very wearable. The second option is a pearly finish or iridescent chrome sheen to mimic the look of mother of pearl, and so on.

If you want something more obvious, though, there are also plenty of nail art options, from little shell motifs to 3D and hyperrealistic shell textures. The world is very much your oyster.

For a very luxe-looking option, OPI's Kyoto Oyster will offer a chic, pearly look in minutes - ideal for an elevated coastal-inspired manicure.

RRP: £14

As mentioned, there's actually a Manucurist nail polish called Shell, so if you're looking to achieve a quick and easy beachy manicure at home, this is the shade to opt for.

RRP: £3.99

For a soft cream shade, we're loving this budget-friendly polish from Rimmel - which offers a high-shine finish.

If you're looking to create a dainty shell look at home, these are our nail polish picks. We'd also suggest shaping your nails with a crystal nail file (like OPI's Crystal File, at Amazon) and protecting your talons with one of the best nail strengtheners. A cuticle oil and glossy top coat will also help you achieve a very polished finish.

For an elegant manicure, pairing a pale yellow with a neat and understated squoval nail shape is the perfect choice. Especially with squoval styles being amongst the most popular nail shapes for summer.

The combination of this elevated style and chic shade is the perfect look for minimalist nail lovers or those looking for a versatile design that is both stylish and summer-ready.

2. Pale shell-yellow French tips

If you're a French tip nail lover and are looking to adapt the look for the summer season - without opting for too much of a statement - this pale shell hue is ideal. Because it's almost cream, it's subtle, but upon closer inspection, you see that sunny tint that just manages to elevate the whole look.

3. Shell nail art

If you're a fan of nail art and want to embrace a full-on shell manicure, we love this combination of white and chrome details over a nude glossy base. It combines both the shift towards more natural nails and this summery seaside trend. To make the look feel very wearable, we recommend sticking with similarly short nails.

4. Oyster-white nails

For another very subtle take, opt for a seafoam or oyster white, complete with high-shine or even a glazed, chrome finish. This sort of shade mimics the glassy look that can be found inside an oyster and offers a lovely little nod to the summer season.

5. Mother of pearl nails

Tints and iridescent sheens are proving very popular right now and are a lovely way to achieve a shell or mother-of-pearl-like look. It's modern and fun, as well as looking very radiant and stylish for the season - especially if you're heading on holiday and want a subtle manicure with a light-catching twist.

Classic pearly nails are a great way to interpret this shell-inspired trend and are ideal for a summery occasion too.

For an even more minimalistic nod to this trend, opt for that pale, shell-like yellow and a micro French tip. You could even add a little pearl decal too, for a bit of extra coastal glamour.

8. Seashell shimmer nails

Milky shimmers also capture an easy and elegant shell-like look. The latest addition to Manucurist's Active range, Aqua Glazed, for instance, was actually inspired by ocean reflections and delivers a luminous milky pearly finish, which very much says 'shell' to us.
