This Couple's Million Dollar Confession Actually Floored Dave Ramsey

A resurfaced conversation from grumpy finance dad-figure Dave Ramsey's talk show is going viral thanks to a social media repost. The clip shows Ramsey caught in an unusual feeling -- flabbergasted. And it's no wonder why. The couple on the other end of the line had racked up an astronomical amount of debt barely into their thirties.

The caller was looking to get rid of nearly a million dollars in debt without going into bankruptcy. The couple’s mortgage and student loans accounted for some of the debt, but the real concern is the credit card, car, and personal loan debt. As Ramsey asked questions and crunched numbers, the caller said she and her partner both have “advanced degrees” and bring in a household income of $230,000 annually.

Ramsey may have been shocked, but he wasn’t speechless. And he couldn’t resist wagging a finger. “Is there recognition on both of your parts? How absurd this situation is?” But when the caller revealed that she and her partner were afraid for their finances, Ramsey became a little more understanding.

“Okay, great. Then I'm done. I'm on your team[…] You're scared, and you should be. You're disgusted, and you should be.” Strong word choice, Dave, but okay, go on.

“You guys have been living […] across the board, from your education choices to your car purchases,” he tells the distraught caller. “You've been living at about 10 [times] where you're gonna get to live.”

“Your lifestyle is considerably above your extremely good income and has been for a period of time,” he tells them. “This is gonna be very emotional for you[…] because you're not going to spend any money on anything ever for the next three years.”
