Semiconductor stocks have been among the biggest beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, as chipmakers and foundries race to meet soaring demand from data centers and next-generation computing. While industry leaders have grabbed most of the headlines, several established foundries are quietly strengthening their businesses and positioning themselves to benefit from the long-term AI investment cycle.
One of those companies is United Microelectronics (UMC), which recently began staging a notable comeback after a difficult few weeks. Shares of the Taiwan-based chip foundry surged more than 10% on Aug. 4, extending a volatile rebound that began after its latest quarterly earnings. The rally came as investors digested stronger-than-expected margins, rising factory utilization, and expansion plans aimed at capturing growing AI-related demand.
