In our search for places remote and bizarre, we stumbled upon a lake in Tanzania so toxic that any living creature that comes in contact with the lakewater, turns into stone-quite literally. However, there is one animal species that finds this super toxic and inhospitable place a haven. We will come to that later.
In the remote landscapes of northern Tanzania, where the Great Rift Valley stretches across the earth like an ancient scar, lies Lake Natron, a hauntingly beautiful lake with an occasional animal or bird skeleton poking out from the surface of the water. The lake’s crimson-red waters are framed by a backdrop of towering volcanoes and grassland, but this lake is in no way even remotely similar to the vast life-sustaining savannahs that surround it. In simple terms: Lake Natron is one of the most inhospitable places on Earth, so caustic that it can turn animals into statues of stone.
