I’ve been round the twist with my skin. Hormonal acne and rosacea have been commonplace since I was a teenager, and thanks to my PMOS, it didn’t go away as I entered adulthood. I’ve tried everything under the sun to get rid of it, from the birth control pill to spending god knows how much on getting LED light therapy done at a clinic. While it was slowly improving my skin, I couldn’t afford to keep forking out hundreds on sessions when my acne isn’t caused by a stressor that will eventually go away. Alas, I gave up. That was until Lumi Lift’s GlowLUXE™ ($489), an at home LED device, came across my desk.
I know LED masks have been around for a few years now — I’ve even tried one. It was good, don’t get me wrong, but my acne was too severe to make a groundbreaking difference. Now, I’m on Roaccutane, and while my active acne is ~gone~ (thank god, because that was PAINFUL), I still have a bunch of scarring that won’t budge without some beauty tech interventions.
What Sets Lumi Lift GlowLUXE™ Apart?
Lumi Lift GlowLUXE™ isn’t an LED face mask. It’s a big dome that you set up and lay under, and it delivers clinical-grade LED therapy traditionally reserved for expensive in-clinic treatments. If you have concerns like acne, inflammation, redness and post-breakout scarring, it’ll help you target them from the comfort of your own home.
The biggest point of difference with GlowLUXE™ is that it’s clinical-grade, whereas a lot of other LED face masks are weaker. If we’re gonna get technical, the typical range of milliwatts (mW) for an LED mask is 30 to 50 mW/cm², whereas Lumi Lift’s LED dome can output up to 60mW/cm². With consistent use, you should see results within two to four weeks.
There’s seven different light modes: red, blue, yellow, green, cyan, purple, and near-infrared, all which target a different skin concern. The brand says that laying under it for 10 minutes, three to four times a week, is all you need to notice a difference in your skin, making it visibly brighter, firmer and clearer.
So, I put it to the test.
Lumi Lift GlowLUXE™: First Impressions
Let me state this upfront: this isn’t an in-depth review, but more of a first-impressions on the device. Since I’m on medication for my acne RN, it’s a bit hard for me to decipher what’s the Roaccutane, and what’s the LED light, ya feel?
Setting up the GlowLUXE™ was super easy. It comes in a long box with the silicone LED strip, two metal stands that slot onto both ends of the silicone to form the dome, a remote, a charger for the remote, and a couple pairs of glasses.
All I needed to do was plug the remote into the LED strip and I was good to go. To my surprise, I didn’t need to plug it into the wall — the remote doubled as the power source.
Using the remote is pretty self explanatory. There’s four different buttons which allow you to change the timer, the intensity of the LED light, the colour you use, and whether you want to activate the near-infrared waves. For my first go, I decided to stick to what I know — red LED light therapy — so set my timer for 15 minutes, popped my protective goggles on, and away I went. And by went, I mean flopped onto my bed under the light while playing Olivia Rodrigo‘s new album.
The goggles did a fabulous job at blacking out the intensity of the red lights while I was under — although I really should have placed cotton pads on my eyes underneath, because the goggles lowkey felt like a suction. I didn’t have any marks afterwards though, so that’s a plus!
Once my 15 minutes were up, the machine turned off with a polite beep and I was plunged back into darkness.
Lumi Lift GlowLUXE™: Final Thoughts
While I can’t speak to the results just yet, what I can say is carving out 15 minutes to sit and do absolutely nothing was super relaxing. Since it isn’t a portable LED face mask, you’re stuck in the one spot while you undergo treatment, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It means you’re setting aside a smidge of time each week to decompress and recharge. As someone who doesn’t know how to sit still, I think this will be a good way to force myself to. And hey, I’ll be reaping the benefits of LED light therapy, so it’s still productive.
The only downside is its size. It’s nowhere near as compact as an LED face mask, and while the dome is silicone and flattens as soon as its removed from the stands, storing it becomes an issue. If you’re tight on space, the box is quite wide (however it is short!), and you don’t really wanna be leaving the silicone LED device out in the open, otherwise it’ll get dirty. So I’d definitely consider where you’re going to keep it before investing!
