Jaipur is known for its forts, royal residences and centuries-old architecture. But in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, a sandstone palace offers a sight that often leaves visitors surprised. Known as Jal Mahal, or the Water Palace, the structure appears to have just one floor rising above the water. In reality, it has five storeys, with four of them submerged beneath the lake. Located on the Jaipur-Amer Road, Jal Mahal is among the city's most recognisable landmarks. The palace stands against the backdrop of the Aravalli hills, while its reflection in the lake makes it a popular spot for tourists and photographers. Yet its unusual appearance is only part of the story. The palace also reflects the region's history of water management and the architectural methods used to build structures in challenging conditions.
