THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 21-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter were found dead, hanging in their room at Cherunniyoor under Varkala police station limits on Thursday evening. The police suspect that the mother killed the daughter and then proceeded to commit suicide.
Saranya, daughter of Sunilkumar and Sandhya Kumari of Cherunniyoor, and her daughter Nakshatra alias Lachu, are the deceased. The family of Saranya has raised allegations of domestic violence against Saranya's husband Sujith following the deaths. The police have launched a probe into the allegations.
The police said that Saranya and Nakshatra were found dead on Thursday evening by Sujith when he returned home. The deaths are suspected to have happened sometime between 5.30 pm and 6.30 pm when Sujith was not at home. The police also said that there were allegations that Saranya and Sujith had got into a quarrel earlier on the day during which Sujith allegedly physically assaulted her.
The latest quarrel was allegedly due to Sujith refusing to go to work and instead consuming liquor at home. According to sources close to the family, Saranya has to throw chilli powder at Sujith to make him stop the assault. It was following this that he left home.
Saranya's brother has given his statement before the police that she was a victim of domestic abuse ever since the marriage. However, the police are yet to make any arrests. They would take any such action only after a detailed probe, the police said.
