London Luton Airport has said it plans to ditch the 100ml liquids rule by this summer by bringing in new high-tech scanners.
London City Airport became the first in the UK to get rid of the 100ml liquid limit last year, while Heathrow Airport has said it also plans to have done away with the rule by summer.
Now Luton Airport has confirmed it plans to introduce new CT scanners, which mean that liquids of more than 100ml would be allowed through security.
In a statement, the airport said: “Here at London Luton airport, we’re on track to switch over to the new scanners by June, in line with government guidance.
“However, until they are fully operational you will have to follow current security rules.”
As part of the Department for Transport’s next generation security checkpoint guidelines, all major UK airports were set a target of June to install the new tech.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper said at the time: “The tiny toiletry has become a staple of airport security checkpoints, but that’s all set to change.
“I’m streamlining cabin bag rules at airports while enhancing security.
“By 2024, major airports across the UK will have the latest security tech installed, reducing queuing times, improving the passenger experience, and most importantly detecting potential threats.”
However, Gatwick Airport has said it doesn’t expect to have installed all the new scanners until spring 2025, while Stansted is also expected to miss the June 2024 target date.
The scanners are already in use in some international airports, including Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and LaGuardia Airport in the United States.
Restrictions on the size of liquids were put into place in 2006 after a terror attack using liquid explosives was thwarted at Heathrow.
