Thirty Wyoming state legislative incumbents face primary contests in 2026, the third-most at any point since 2010. This is a 25% decrease in the number of incumbents facing challengers compared to 2024.
All 30 of the contested incumbents are Republicans. Twenty-five are state representatives, and five are state senators. The only time a Democratic incumbent faced a competitive primary in this period was in 2020.
Wyoming has 49 contested state legislative primaries in 2026, down from 53 primaries in 2024. This is an 8% decrease. Democrats last had two primaries in 2022.
In total, 161 major party candidates filed to run. Twenty-eight are Democrats, and 133 are Republicans. All 62 House seats and 16 of 31 Senate seats are up for election.
Twenty-four seats are open, meaning no incumbents filed. This means newcomers will make up at least 26% of the legislature next year. The average number of open seats each cycle from 2010 to 2024 was 15.
