Third-highest number of Minnesota state legislative incumbents retiring at any point since 2010

Forty-three Minnesota state legislative incumbents are retiring in 2026, the third-most at any point since 2010. This is a 115% increase in the number of incumbents retiring from 2024.

Eighteen of the retiring incumbents are Democrats and 25 are Republicans. Twenty-six are state representatives, and 17 are state senators.

Minnesota has 36 contested state legislative primaries in 2026, up from 22 primaries in 2024. This is a 64% decrease.

Of these, there are 22 for Democrats and 14 for Republicans. For Democrats, this is up from 7 in 2024, a 215% increase. Contested Republican primaries are down 7% from 15 in 2024.

In total, 423 major party candidates filed to run. Two-hundred twenty-nine are Democrats and 194 are Republicans. All 134 House seats and all 67 Senate seats are up for election.

Eleven incumbents are facing primaries. Five of these incumbents are Democrats, and six are Republicans. This is a 400% increase for Democrats, up from one in 2024. The number of Republican incumbents facing a primary is the same as in 2024.
