Thieves break into Co-op to try and get in safe before fleeing with alcohol

Thieves broke into a Co-op store and tried to steal from the safe.

Police were called at around 5.30pm on Wednesday, December 21 to reports of a burglary at the convenience store on Hale Road in Hale Bank, Widnes. The caller reported two unknown men had broken into the Co-op store via the rear entrance and attempted to access the safe.

The men then fled the store with a quantity of alcohol and got into a car before driving off in the direction of Foundry Lane. Police said no staff or members of the public were threatened during the incident.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "At 5.30pm on Wednesday, December 21 police were called to reports of a burglary at a convivence store in Hale Bank. The caller reported that two unknown men had broken into the Co-op store via the rear entrance and attempted to access the safe.

"They then fled the store with a quantity of alcohol and got into a car before driving off in the direction of Foundry Lane. No staff or members of the public were threatened during the incident.

"Enquiries in relation to the incident are ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact Cheshire Police at www.cheshire.police.uk/tell-us, or call 101 quoting IML 1440166."

A spokesperson from Co-op said: “Last night, there was an incident at our store on Hale Bank, Widnes. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the store is now open as usual to serve the local community. We urge anyone who may have information to come forward to the police who are investigating.”
