Liverpool star Thiago broke down in tears after injury forced him to pull out of the Carabao Cup Final with Chelsea at the last minute.
The Anfield side are taking on Thomas Tuchel's team at Wembley hoping to claim the first piece of domestic silverware available in England.
Wembley is packed out for the occasion and Jurgen Klopp broke from his trend of fielding heavily rotated teams in the cup competitions.
He named a virtually full-strength team with Thiago, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich playmaker, in the middle alongside Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.
But just ten minutes before the fixture Liverpool announced that he suffered an injury in the warmup and would be replaced by Naby Keita.
Emotions were running high at the iconic London venue after a hair-raising rendition of You'll Never Walk Along rung out through a minute's applause in solidarity with Ukraine.
And Thiago was seen in tears on the touchline being consoled by teammate Alisson.
Thiago is yet to win a trophy with Liverpool having signed from Bayern Munich 18 months ago.
He hadn't featured in any of the prior rounds of the Carabao Cup before being named in the final, so may not get a winner's medal if the Reds to go all the way.
But assuming the injury isn't a season ender he'll have the chance to play his part in the remainder of the Premier League title race as well as the Champions League, with Liverpool still competing on both fronts.
