Thiago Alcantara says Liverpool remain confident of a top-four Premier League finish as the midfielder spoke of a "new era" at Anfield after Christmas.

The Reds returned to competitive action on Thursday following the World Cup when they were beaten 3-2 by Manchester City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup at the Etihad.

Aston Villa are up next for the Reds next on Boxing Day as a 44-day wait for the return of league action comes to an end at Villa Park before Liverpool host their first game at Anfield since November 12 when Leicester City visit on December 30.
