Cuban-born percussionist and Latin Grammy winner Degnis Nelson Bofill Miranda was detained by ICE officers on 19 August at Miami International Airport immediately after landing from a New York concert, triggering widespread panic from his family over his potential deportation.

For context, the 39-year-old jazz composer legally arrived in the United States in April 2023 and has an asylum petition currently pending before immigration authorities. His abrupt arrest took place inside the terminal before he could exit the airport, resulting in his immediate transfer to the Krome Detention Center in Miami-Dade County.
