These supermarket lamps start at £10 but look much more expensive

The retailer's affordable lighting collection appears to have taken inspiration from brands such as Pooky, Soho Home and Maison Flaneur - (Asda)

It feels like good lighting is having a bit of a moment for both affordable and high end brands. A quick scroll through George at Asda’s latest lighting collection is evidence of this, and you’ll find a sweep of table lamps that look far more considered than their price tags would suggest.

For years, lighting has been one of those categories where spending less often meant compromising on design. But the influence of brands like Soho Home, Pooky, OKA and Maison Flâneur is clearly trickling down. Nowadays you can find sculptural silhouettes, glossy finishes and a more playful approach to shape without the usual three-figure commitment, which is certainly good news for those of us with more modest budgets.

George, in particular, has been edging into this space for a while. Its supermarket fashion has already taken cues from labels like Ganni, and the same can be said for its interiors, with ruffled bedding that mirrors Piglet in Bed (£15, Asda.com) and easy, Scandi-style seating (£150, Asda.com) reminiscent of Loaf. And now it’s time for the lighting department to take centre stage.

Some pieces draw the eye more than others. Chrome finishes are very much back in favour and appear in George’s mushroom-style table lamp priced at £18 (Asda.com). Think of it as low-risk way to try the trend and a welcome tonic amid Soho Home’s sky-high prices – its bowen lamp looks largely similar and costs a whopping £595 (Sohohome.com). Elsewhere, a £15 bobbin design (Asda.com) wouldn’t look out of place alongside Neptune’s dawes lamp (£395, Neptune.com), yet comes in hundreds of pounds cheaper. Even the more design-led options, which creep closer to £10 (Asda.com), still feel refreshingly accessible.

For anyone looking to layer their lighting without overspending, George’s lighting roster makes a strong case for skipping the designer catalogues altogether. Scroll on for my top picks.
