I've spent the last few days playing The Disney Afternoon Collection and Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition on Nintendo Switch, expecting the usual retro comfort blanket I’ve found from the best retro game consoles, and the recent Sinclair GamerCard: familiar characters, gorgeous old-school animation, blippy music I haven't heard for years and that feeling of being a kid again hunched over a cassette player watching a pixel image slowly build on screen, only to discover that my childhood apparently involved an awful lot more dying than I remember.
These games are hard. Really hard. What makes it stranger is they're hiding behind some of the most welcoming cartoon nostalgia imaginable.
