Thermal cameras capture record-breaking temperatures on London streets

Thermal cameras have captured record-breaking temperatures of more than 50 degrees on UK streets as the country battles an intense heatwave.

Footage captured for Greenpeace shows pedestrians walking across scorching hot pavements in Oxford Street, Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus, where pavements reached highs of 57C.

Whilst air temperature is measured by thermometers, thermal cameras are used to show how hot surfaces and buildings can get.

It comes as the hottest June day ever was recorded in Merryfield, Somerset, where air temperatures reached 36.7 on Thursday (25 June).

The “exceptional spell of hot and humid weather” is forecast to continue until Friday night, the Met Office said.
