Theresa May writing book on "abuses of power", but will she mention Boris Johnson?

Former Prime Minister Theresa May is set to publish an explosive new book which she claims will lift the lid on power abuse in the UK.

Mrs May, who was PM for three years from 2016, said "time and again" she saw "public institutions abusing their power... rather than seek the truth".

Publishers describe the book - titled The Abuse of Power - as a "searing exposé of injustice", saying it will shed light on notorious scandals such as the Hillsborough and Grenfell Tower tragedies and the Salisbury poisonings.

In a statement Mrs May said: "Time and time again, during my period in government, I saw public institutions abusing their power by seeking to defend themselves in the face of challenge rather than seek the truth.

"These were the very bodies whose job was to protect the public, but they sought to protect themselves.

"From Hillsborough to Primodos to child sexual exploitation this increased the suffering of victims and delayed justice."

She added that the book will "show how that trust has been eroded over time and why we need to act".

The book is set to be released in the autumn.

Publisher Headline said: "The Abuse of Power is a searing exposé of injustice and an impassioned call to exercise power for the greater good.

"Drawing on examples from domestic and international affairs she was personally involved in at the highest level, including Stop and Search and the Salisbury Poisonings, the former prime minister argues for a radical rethink in how we approach our politics and public life."

The book will also confront parliamentary scandals, the publisher said - but did not state which ones or whether Mrs May will be sharing her views on her successor, Boris Johnson.

Headline stated: "From the Hillsborough and Grenfell tragedies, to the Daniel Morgan case and parliamentary scandals, the powerful repeatedly chose to use their power not in the interests of the powerless but to serve themselves or to protect the organisation to which they belonged."

In January it was announced that Mr Johnson had signed a lucrative book deal for a tell-all memoir about his scandal-plagued spell in Downing Street.

The shamed former Prime Minister - who was ousted in July after a massive rebellion by his own MPs - is expected to rake in millions from his agreement with HarperCollins Publishers.

Announcing the book project this afternoon, Arabella Pike, who is working with the publisher, said: "This will be a Prime Ministerial memoir like no other."

The publisher declined to confirm how much Mr Johnson would be paid, but industry figures suggested it could run to about £6 million.

Memoirs are a popular money-spinner for former PMs.

Tony Blair was paid a reported £4.6 million for his book back in 2007 - but donated the cash to charity - while Margaret Thatcher is understood to have netted £3.5 million way back in 1993.
