There's So Much More to Kim Kardashian's 'Bland' Living Room Than You Think – Why Her Minimal All-White Scheme Has Divided Opinion

Kim Kardashian certainly isn't one for shying away from the public eye, but her starkly minimal interiors make a notable contrast to her flashy lifestyle. Her open-plan living space is distinctly pared back and has certainly divided opinion, being labelled 'bland' and 'boring'. But it is not, as we've discovered, as simple as it seems at first glance.

For one thing, they're not just storage cabinets you can see, but part of a full kitchen set-up hidden in plain sight at the back of the room (yes, really!). And that's not the only surprising aspect of this muted scheme that proves that decorating with white needn't be dull.

Below, you'll find expert advice on white room ideas as well as pieces to shop for a living room in the style of Kim Kardashian's.

If you're on the fence about Kim Kardashian's living room look and have been wondering is white out of style?, Seth Amman, Principal and Founder of Buffalo-based firm, Arch & Type settles the argument: 'An all-white living space can absolutely work – but only when white is treated as a material strategy rather than simply a color choice. The common misconception is that white removes character, when in fact it amplifies subtleties that stronger palettes often hide.'

This starts with choosing the best white paint to achieve a visual variation in tone. 'Successful white interiors rely on variation — shifts in texture, reflectivity, and tone. Sculptural wall surfaces, limewash or plaster finishes, and visible brushwork allow light to register across the room, creating depth through shadow and movement. When walls pick up texture, they begin to behave almost like fabric, capturing light differently throughout the day and adding dynamism to an otherwise neutral palette,' explains Seth.

Once you've established your background tone and texture, the choice of furniture is equally crucial. 'A properly anchored sofa plays an important role in making your room inviting,' says Marissa Burrett, Lead Designer at DreamSofa. 'It is not just another piece of furniture; it becomes the architectural centerpiece of the room and adds depth and character to your room.' Marissa also suggests opting for a subtle variation in shade between your sofa and walls: 'I often recommend slightly contrasting undertones between the walls and sofa, for example, pairing creamy walls with a cooler alabaster sofa, so the layers remain subtle but visible.'

In Kim Kardashian's living room, the white tones are punctuated by a handful of black accent pieces, such as the coffee table (this Wayfair pedestal table is similar), as well as the gray-toned wood cabinetry (get the look with Home Depot's rectangular TV stand) that makes up that cleverly hidden kitchen/bar area.

Seth explains: 'Layering warm and cool whites alongside natural materials – wood, stone, or woven elements – prevents the space from feeling stark or clinical.' In fact, it's believed that the calming effect is more than purely visual and that there are actually a number of beneficial ways that minimalism resets your brain.

Whatever your personal decor preference, Seth sets the doubters straight on why minimalism executed in this way is aesthetically successful: 'White creates a calm perceptual field where proportion, form, and atmosphere take precedence. When thoughtfully executed, an all-white room isn’t bland; it’s intentionally quiet, allowing light and lived experience to become the primary design elements.'

If stark white isn't your thing, but you like the idea of a calm minimalist scheme, you can discover how to embrace warm minimalism – a more lived-in approach.
