There's not a team like the Glasgow Rangers when it comes to hyping up has beens and non-entities - Hotline

We might be still a few weeks away from the big kick-off in the Premiership but the Old Firm pre-season war of words is up and running.

The Rangers new recruits have been making positive noises about the new campaign – but it’s not washing with Celtic fans. Peter McBryan, Glasgow, said: “Here we go again. Straight on the heels of Kieran Dowell boasting about how good he is and how he'll soon be winning trophies, up steps Cyriel Dessers to declare he's gonna be banging in goals next season. Not a hint of respect to the other sides he'll be up against come August.”

Liam Birney, Paisley, said: “There are differing types of optimism. The one shown by Celtic fans re the new season based on form, trophies and being serial winners. Then there is blind optimism shown by Rangers fans based on absolutely nothing and new players no one has heard of. Good luck with that lads.”

Rangers boss Michael Beale has sent out an SOS to Leon Balogun with Leon King crocked for the start of the season. Robert Livingston, Palm Beach, said: “With Gers tough and difficult must win season ahead, bringing back Balogun does make sense. Last season the defending was really bad, with Goldson short on pace, Tavernier who can't defend for toffee and Souttar is not a natural centre half. “Balogun would be a welcome return, a excellent defender who gave his all on the park for the club he loves.”

But Paddy Gowans said: I see Beale down to signing has beens now he has no cover for Leon King. He brings back a 35-year-old dud, it shows how thin the Rangers squad is it's full of misfits and will win nothing this season.”

Over at Celtic, Callum McGregor’s new five year deal has tongues wagging. John Robertson, South Queensferry, said: “I can’t believe all the hype about McGregor. He’s an average player on a good day, nothing more. The poor quality of Scottish football highlights this as years ago he would not have been good enough to sell the programmes.”

Alex Russell, via email, said: “I would like to ask Joe Sneddon who is happy that Callum McGregor has signed a new contract with the serial winners in Scotland. Tell me Joe, just how many winners medals has McGregor amassed and how many medals has his serial loser of a captain Tavernier collected?”

Ange Postecoglou might be gone but he’s not forgotten. Joe Graham, Garrowhill, said: “Postecoglou couldn’t face the prospect of starting this season on a level footing against rival Michael Beale’s new Rangers.

“He decided to go on his own accord when the opportunity came rather than being sacked by not being first at end of this coming season. I have news for Ange in that if you don’t finish fourth or better in the EPL, you might as well finish last , and you will still be looking for a new job.”

Alan Flett emailed: “The other day, Postecoglou gave his first Spurs press conference, but it won’t be long before he’s giving his last. He’s way out of his depth and won’t last five minutes in North London. I wouldn’t be surprised if he returns to Celtic within the next six months, as Buck Rodgers is just a puppet on the end of Dermot Desmond’s piece of string.”
