Theatre group offers kids chance to develop skills

At the Root Theatre is a theatre company that works with children, young people and adults across West Lothian.

They believe in creating spaces to amplify and empower the voices of different communities, people and places through theatre, music and film.

At the Root launched in August in 2015 to create positive opportunities and experiences for children, young people and adults.

They run a weekly workshop programme across West Lothian, currently for three- to 18-year-olds but with plans to expand to early years and adults.

At the Root started with six young people in a room at the Regal, now they have over 100 children and young people signed up to their activities across West Lothian.

They create weekly programmes and projects that respond to the interests and needs of communities.

Its aim is to provide opportunities for local people to access creative, affordable and social activities in their local area.

And its vision is to empower children, young people and adults through participatory arts, nurture and support young artists at the early stages of their career and to collaborate with groups, organisations and artists to widen access to the arts in West Lothian.

Matthew Swan, creative director and co-founder, said: “At the Root works in the grassroots of communities to make sure their work is participant-led.

“At the Root creates playful, safe and joyful spaces for children, young people and adults.

“We believe in amplifying and empowering the voices of different communities, people and places through theatre, music and film.

“Our classes currently run in Bathgate, Fauldhouse, Livingston and Uphall but with plans to launch workshops in more locations soon.”
