The Winter King: Patchway estate to be transformed into 'fortified encampment' for new TV show

Plans have been unveiled for an industrial estate in Patchway to be transformed into a film set for a major new TV show. Production company Bad Wolf wants to film its adaptation of Bernard Cornwall's The Winter King off Highwood Lane in Patchway Trading Estate.

It has submitted plans to South Gloucestershire Council to build a temporary film set at the site, which will be used between July 2022 and January 2023. On the film set will be a 'fortified encampment' and 'mountainous ravine' appropriate to Arthurian Britain - the time period in which the series is set.

A temporary two-storey office and welfare cabin will also be installed on the site, along with space for trucks and technical vehicles. The application seeks temporary planning permission for one year, with construction works likely to take place over 10 to 12 weeks.

The application reads: "The units primary purpose is to provide a space for the construction of both interior and exterior ‘sets’ which the series requires. In addition to these temporary set structures, the site will provide space for the supporting infrastructure, cast, crew and logistical vehicles required to facilitate the filming of the show.

"Due to the nature of the film making process, the level of activity at the site will vary across the period this planning application pertains to. After an initial construction phase, the filming operation itself - including cast and crew, will vary between 70 and 150 persons to span across circa 70 days between July 2022 and January 2023. As a result, it is not foreseen that the activity at this site will impact the local community in an adverse way."

As well as the set, a marque would be put up to provide catering. Filming will take place between 7.30am and 7.30pm, with "only occasional" night scenes, according to the plans.

The Winter King follows the story of Arthur Pendragon who, according to legend, led the defence of Britain against Saxon invaders in the late 5th and 6th centuries. It's believed the set would form the courtyard to Caer Cadarn - a fortress which plays a key part in the show.

Cardiff-based Bad Wolf, the company behind BBC’s His Dark Materials and Sky’s A Discovery of Witches, is producing the show. It hopes to complete filming of the new 10-part series, inspired by the first book in Cornwall’s The Warlord Chronicles, by early next year.
