The Wheel contestant makes history by winning £82,000 after answering only one question

The Wheel aired shocking scenes during Saturday's episode, as a contestant won a whopping £82,000 after answering only one question. Midway through the BBC show, oncology nurse Helen finally got her opportunity to win some money as she took on the Wheel. Talking with host Michael McIntyre, she said: "Unfortunately we lost my grandma last year and because it was Covid, we couldn't have the proper send off she deserved.

"I've got family in Canada that I have not seen since she passed away so I would love to take my Mum over to Canada," she added. However, it was not meant to be for Helen during her first attempt as she landed on John Whaite, whom she'd shut down in red. She was immediately sent back down and it looked as though she would not get the chance to play again.

That was until the final round when, after fellow contestant Cassie got her question wrong, Helen found herself in with another chance. Before answering the cash-out question, Michael said: "If you get this right, you would be the first person ever to answer one question and win," and that she did.

Opting to get help from the episode's lowest scoring player, Scottish footballer Ally McCoist, Helen was playing for the huge sum of £82,000. Despite a tricky question on 'Lost Civilizations', the pair succeeded in getting it right, meaning Helen would be walking away with the money.

Ed Balls cried tears of joy for Helen (The Wheel/BBC)

Immediately bursting into tears and running to hug Ally, Helen said: "It's been such a tough couple of years as my sister is a doctor as well. Working through Covid, the pair of us, and then not being able to see parents and losing my Gran, to be able to finally have a break and celebrate my Gran- Thank you so much." The emotional moment even prompted Ed Balls to shed a tear.

Viewers immediately took to social media to respond to the tear-jerking scenes. One person wrote: "Not me crying at The Wheel cause Ally McCoist won the lassie 80 grand." A second agreed and said: "Omg What a result on #TheWheel@Ally_McCoist_ is some guy, that was amazing."

A third added: "That was awesome and SO deserving!"
