Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd, 33, has a string of musical accolades under his belt and has recently been making his mark in the film world.
A new movie he will star in will be directed by Trey Edwards Shults and will also feature Wednesday actress Jenna Ortega and The Banshees of Inisherin’s Barry Keoghan.
It has been reported that The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, has been working on the new acting project for the past few months, with Ortega and Keoghan signing up to it after being “blown away” by the script.
What is the new film starring the Weeknd about?
The film has yet to be titled, with plot details being kept under tight wraps.
The project has been shrouded by mystery, with the genre and the plot of the film yet to be confirmed.
The Weeknd co-wrote the movie with Shults and Reza Fahim and is also one of the film’s producers alongside Fahim, Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss.
It will include a soundtrack by music producer Oneohtrix Point Never, who previously worked with The Weeknd for his Dawn FM album.
The Weekend’s other acting roles
The Weeknd is not entirely a stranger to acting, after appearing in the 2019 film Uncut Gems, which also starred Adam Sandler and Julia Fox.
The singer also starred in and co-created the upcoming HBO series The Idol, a film about a self-help guru and a modern-day cult leader who enters into a turbulent and complicated relationship with a pop idol, starring Lily-Rose Depp.
He also co-created and featured in both American Dad and The Simpsons.
Since exploding onto the musical scene, the Weeknd has made a name for himself, bagging four Grammy Awards, 20 Billboard Music Awards, 17 Juno Awards, a Latin Grammy Award, six American Music Awards, and two MTV Video Music Awards.
He recently made history as the first artist to surpass 100 million monthly Spotify listeners after his collaboration with Ariane Grande for remix track Die for You.
Ortega has also been a star who has risen to prominence seemingly overnight after playing the lead role of Wednesday Addams. Meanwhile, Keoghan has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and has won a Bafta for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in the 2022 film The Banshees of Inisherin.
