The Usual Place in Dumfries set to celebrate Queen's Platinum Jubilee

People in Dumfries and Galloway are being invited to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee at the Usual Place.

The country will be celebrating her 70-year reign on June 3 and the Dumfries social enterprise is joining in the fun.

The cafe will be transformed with balloons, bunting and decorations for a unique tea party.

The event will be delivered by the Usual Place’s young people, staff and volunteers and will be led by
young people with additional support needs who train within the cafe.

A member of staff, currently employed through the UK Government’s Kickstart scheme, was keen to add his own piece of royal magic to the event.

Darren McLellan, 25, a Dumfries-based artist, has created digital art depictions of two of the Queen’s famous corgis which will be displayed within the cafe during the event.

He said: “I contributed my artwork to the event as thanks to the organisation for helping me improve my confidence over the last five months.”

This is the first time Darren has contributed his art towards a public event, though he has found success with his online shop via the e-commerce platform Etsy, where he sells his original and fan-based artwork and stickers.

Darren is hoping to use this increased confidence and the other skills he has developed at The Usual Place, alongside his innate artistry and creativity, to develop a future career in the creative arts.

He added: “It’s been fun adding a small bit of me to the occasion.”

Tickets for the event can be purchased directly from the Usual Place, costing £19.52 for two adults and £5 per child.

The event will take place on Friday June 3, with sittings at 11.30am and at 2.30pm.
