The transfer status of every Cardiff City player as huge summer overhaul looms

Cardiff City are just months away from their biggest summer overhaul in a decade. With so many players out of contract, five heading back to their parent club and eight more coming back in from their loans, change is certainly afoot.

While that might seem a particularly daunting prospect for some, it will be seen as an enormous opportunity by others. Upon whichever side of that fence you sit, no one can deny the fact that the summer transfer window will represent a period of seismic change.

Some players are tipped for the exit door, others are deemed indefensible, while some, it seems, have a big few months ahead of them. Here, we run the rule over every Bluebirds player and their current transfer status as we look ahead to the summer...

Alex Smithies

Has largely been fantastic between the sticks whenever he was afforded the chance, ousting two top keepers in Neil Etheridge and Dillon Phillips. Contract running out, though, and is on big wages.

Transfer status: Unless a big compromise is made over wages he could be out the door.

Dillon Phillips

Signed to challenge Smithies for that No.1 spot and has by no means disgraced himself when given the chance. If Smithies leave then Cardiff have a more than capable deputy in their ranks.

Transfer status: Going nowhere.

Mark McGuinness

Came on leaps and bounds at the beginning of the season, however has blown hot and cold a little bit of late. That's to be expected, though, he is only 21 and has bags of potential.

Transfer status: A big asset to the club and even viewed as a potential future captain.

Joel Bagan

Club expect big things from the academy graduate and he has shown glimpses of that in recent weeks after a tough start to the campaign. Has visibly grown in confidence and is showing what he can do.

Transfer status: Staying put with a lot expected of him in the coming seasons.

Sean Morrison

Has been a fantastic leader and centre-back for a very, very long time for the football club. Age, the ending of his contract and potentially the club's transfer strategy could work against him, though.

Transfer status: Someone Steve Morison clearly likes but availability of funds will play a key part, you feel.

Aden Flint

Has a veritable claim to be Cardiff's player of the season this year ( You can read more about that here ). Has been dependable and a leader at the back, arguably the most consistent defender over the last year.

Transfer status: Has his admirers within the club, but with his contract running out, and being on hefty wages, a deal must be struck if he is to stay.

Curtis Nelson

Was an ever-present in the side until his recent injury, during which time Perry Ng and McGuinness have shown themselves to be more than capable. But a player who is certainly useful to have around the place.

Transfer status: Has another year on his contract and is unlikely to be going anywhere.

Cody Drameh

Shown himself to be a fantastic player since joining from Leeds United on loan in January. Has bags of potential and is seemingly a Premier League right-back in waiting. Would be some coup to get him back next term.

Transfer status: Leeds could be open to loaning him out again ( You can read more about that here ), and Cardiff will be sticking their hand up for the chance to get him back.

Perry Ng

Since moving into his new centre-back role he has really impressed. Looks to have a bright future with the club and could form the cornerstone of the defence, along with McGuinness, for years to come.

Transfer status: A very important player for Cardiff and highly unlikely he will be allowed to leave.

Will Vaulks

A player whose time at the club has seen massive highs and painful lows. Has performed admirably when called upon in recent months, though, a generally steady and reliable player.

Transfer status: Contract is up in a couple of months as things stand. A few important months lie ahead with things seemingly in the balance.

Leandro Bacuna

Has been given countless chances, in many positions, to prove his worth and his fallen short every time unfortunately. Looks nowhere near Morison's first-team plans.

Transfer status: His chances have run out. Seems certain he will leave on a free.

Joe Ralls

Yet another solid season from one of Cardiff's most consistent campaigners. Fans are universally calling for him to sign on the dotted line again.

Transfer status: Contract set to run out, but it would be a massive shock if Cardiff don't strike some sort of deal to keep him on.

Ryan Wintle

Has made a mockery of the decision to send him on loan at the beginning of the season. Looks like the missing link Cardiff have needed at the base of midfield for the best part of two seasons. Promising signs from him.

Transfer status: An important player. No chance of him going anywhere.

Alfie Doughty

Has been steady enough since coming in from Stoke City on loan in January, his injury aside.

Transfer status: Would expect him to return to the Potteries, with Cardiff likely to look elsewhere to find back-up in that role.

Marlon Pack

Has gone from being one of the first names on the team sheet to being jettisoned from the squad all together. Others have taken over him in that pecking order.

Transfer status: Likely to leave on a free this summer.

Tommy Doyle

Another who has been sensational since coming from Manchester City on loan two months ago. A serious talent whose future lies at the top of the game.

Transfer status: Cardiff would love him back and will make their feelings known, but whether Man City have other plans for him remains to be seen.

Rubin Colwill

After enjoying a breakthrough year he has had to up his game again following the arrival of Doyle. But still seen as someone with huge potential and a player with a big future at the club.

Transfer status: Seen as a big asset. Would only be sold if a sizeable offer came in for him.

Sam Bowen

Looked to have broken through into the first team at the start of the campaign, but it's not been all smooth sailing for him. After an injury and a fall out of favour - Steve Morison has told him to fight to regain his spot - his future is a little less certain.

Transfer status: Has another year left on his deal but will have to up his standards again if he wants to force his way into the reckoning next term. Cannot rule out a loan or permanent exit.

Eli King

Morison has said that, as long as he is in the building, Eli King has a big future at the football club and a talent who fans should be excited about ( You can read about that here ). Another one battling for game time in the midfield and will do next season.

Transfer status: Recently signed a new deal but Morison has not ruled out a loan move away next term.

Jordan Hugill

Has been impressive for the Bluebirds since joining at the end of January. Has added a physicality to the forward line and chipped in with three decent goals. Cardiff fans want him back next year.

Transfer status: Has made no secret of the fact he wants to head back to Norwich and see if he has a future there before contemplating a return to Cardiff. ( You can read about that here.)

Uche Ikpeazu

Has done some things brilliantly and other things not so much. Can look ungainly and unorthodox but is actually quite effective in what he does. Scored three times, too, and has made an impact from the bench more often than not.

Transfer status: Chris Wilder seems to have made his mind up on him, but Middlesbrough are said to want to recoup the £750,000 they forked out for him. That'll be too prohibitive for Cardiff unless Boro drastically drop their asking price.

Isaac Vassell

Has not been his fault, of course, but his time at the club will be forgotten quickly. Four appearances in three years due to a succession of injuries.

Transfer status: Leaving on a free this summer.

James Collins

Had a tough first season in the Welsh capital. Works tirelessly but has struggled in front of goal - he has scored just three times in 29 outings - and has missed his fair share of chances, too. A decision has to be made over his future this summer.

Transfer status: Down the pecking order and more strikers due to be signed in this summer. If an offer comes in Cardiff would at least listen to it.

Mark Harris

Has shown himself to be a more than useful option off the bench and has been rewarded with Wales call-ups over the last few months. Cardiff would like to see him add more goals moving forward.

Transfer status: An important squad player who is unlikely to be going anywhere.

Max Watters

Has had a turbulent 14 months or so since signing for Cardiff City. A player with a lot of promise but has frustrated in the few chances he has had, despite impressing for MK Dons in League One. A bit of an enigma at the minute.

Transfer status: The club forked out a lot of money for him and want him to be a success. Would take a decent offer to prise him away.

Isaak Davies

The young Welshman has come on leaps and bounds in the last few months. There is genuine excitement growing over what the 20-year-old can evolve into in the years to come. A really promising player.

Transfer status: Has just penned a new, long-term deal with the Bluebirds and will be an important player in the coming years.

Players coming back from loan...

James Connolly

Has arguably been the surprise package from the players out on loan. Has played every match for Joey Barton at Bristol Rovers as they shot up the table. Cardiff will be delighted with his progress.

Transfer status: Assessments are ongoing regarding his progress but he could have a part to play at Cardiff next term.

Chanka Zimba

Was prolific for Morison for the under-23s at the start of the season, but his only outing for the first team at Preston North End was a big learning curve. Had a nasty injury at Northampton which has curbed his progress, too.

Transfer status: A promising prospect, but one who likely needs another loan next year with more forward additions on the club's summer agenda.

Gavin Whyte

Cardiff wanted him to up his numbers at the top end of the pitch and he has done just that. Whyte has 10 assists and as goal to his name at Oxford United and is impressing at League One level. Cardiff must decide if he has shown he deserves another shot in the Championship.

Transfer status: Another one which feels like it's in the balance. Has one year left at Cardiff, so will he get another shot to prove his worth? Has posted promising numbers this season and the Bluebirds could do much worse than reintegrate him this summer.

Josh Murphy

Has had a torrid time of it on loan at Preston. A lack of game time, coupled with a bad mid-season injury, means he has barely contributed at all.

Transfer status: On big wages, his contract is up and patience has seemingly run out. Expect him to leave.

Keenan Patten

Has been in and out of the side at Hereford following his January loan switch. Might have been usurped by other central midfielders mentioned above.

Transfer status: Contract is up at the end of the season and it just feels like others have moved past the 20-year-old.

Tom Sang

An interesting one. The 22-year-old, currently on loan at St Johnstone, has a lot of admirers in south Wales and many feel he can offer something either at right wing-back or in central midfield. That's something that has to be resolved this summer.

Transfer status: The positional dispute must be sorted in the coming months, because he looks too promising a player to let walk out the door. But that could be a possibility if that issue isn't ironed out - hopefully it doesn't come to that.

Kieron Evans

Another who has been in and out of the side at his loan club, Linfield FC. Looked bright for the under-23s earlier this season and was rewarded with first-team outings by Mick McCarthy and Morison. Someone who offers something a little different to those at the club at present.

Transfer status: The 20-year-old has another year left on his contract. It's a possibility that he could secure a loan somewhere in the Football League for the start of next season to post some numbers and get noticed by the Bluebirds coaching staff.

Ciaron Brown

A player who has been edged out of favour at Cardiff and doesn't seem to fit the direction in which Cardiff are moving. Has done all right at League One Oxford, though, and that is potentially his level.

Transfer status: Out of contract in a couple of months and looks certain to leave.
