The transfer business still desired at Swansea City and the reality of what lies ahead as deadline day looms

The summer transfer window closes in just under a week.

Swansea City have brought in just four first-team players in the shape of Joe Allen, Harry Darling, Nathan Wood and Matty Sorinola while several players have left either on loan or permanently.

It means the club still has a significant amount of work to do before the 11pm deadline on Thursday, September 1, although, as things stand, it could well be a frustrating end to what has been a testing window.

But the picture can always change. So, with that in mind, let's look at potential incomings.

Wing-back is still an area of concern for Swansea, particularly given the injury shoulder suffered by Joel Latibeaudiere in the 2-2 draw against Millwall. But several targets have been scratched off the wish list just as quickly as they were written onto it.

Finances - or rather a lack of - have ensured they missed out on Cyrus Christie who is now close to joining Hull City on a free transfer. Cody Drameh appears destined to remain at Leeds United, and the only way a deal appears to be possible for the 20-year-old would be if the Swans sold a key asset and re-invested a portion of the fee generated. Chiedozie Ogbene is in a similar bracket, and Rotherham United have no intention of losing the Republic of Ireland international on the cheap, despite the fact he is now in the final year of his deal with the Millers.

Midfield is also an area which could well be strengthened, and Swansea have held talks over a possible season-long loan deal for Wolves man Luke Cundle, who has also attracted interest from Huddersfield Town, Preston North End and Hull City.

Having previously been blunt in his assessment of what the remainder of the window holds, Martin this week admitted he was hopeful that more business could be done.

"We have to be really clever, think outside the box about what we can do and what we can’t do," he said ahead of the trip to Middlesbrough. "Hopefully we’ll be able to do something before the end of the window."

Of course, much of this potential business depends on exits, and Joel Piroe is key to it all. Watford have shown an interest in the Dutchman, although they are yet to make any formal approach at present. That situation could change if their attack is weakened in the final stages of the transfer market, with Joao Pedro and Ismaila Sarr both attracting interest from elsewhere.

Russell Martin has already admitted Piroe has been affected by the transfer speculation surrounding his future, and the forward could do with a goal at Middlesbrough more than anyone else to ease the tension ahead of next week's deadline.

As of Friday, August 26, no departures are close. Nathanael Ogbeta, Dan Williams and Brandon Cooper are among those who could leave in the final days of the window while Ryan Bennett remains a Swansea player despite being frozen out by Martin.

The current signs all point to a very quiet and frustrating end to the window for Swansea, although, as every single member of the Jack Army knows, that can always change, for better or for worse.
