Known for its beautiful beaches, coastline, wildlife, and closeness to nature, Pembrokeshire easily features on everyone’s holiday destinations list. And one riverside inn and pub in Abercych provides it all to its guests.
With a history dating back to the 1700s, the Nag’s Head Inn is an award-winning family-owned riverside gastro pub and inn which gives its guests a traditional Welsh option for their vacations. Located in the Cych Valley, near Cenarth Falls and only 10 miles away from the Preseli Hills and Cardigan Bay, The Nag’s Head is the perfect destination for those who want to explore nature along the coast.
One recent Tripadvisor review sums it all up: "Went here for Sunday lunch today with family. Delicious food in a lovely covered seating area, next to very pretty river. I only live 30 minutes away and didn't know this place existed. We will definitely be back!" While another adds: "Location is idyllic, next to a small river and ancient bridge."
The inn and pub takes pride in its Welsh heritage and welcomes its guests with a warm Welsh ‘Croeso’ welcome. Busy all year round, the Nag’s Head Inn attracts the most amount of tourists in spring and summer while its gastro pub is frequented by local people during the winter.
Once there, guests can choose between a variety of dishes to satiate their tastebuds including prawn cocktails, calamari, bruschetta, steaks, burgers, Thai green curry, salads, tuna salads and more. However, the house’s choice for its patrons is its locally-sourced, Welsh lamb and fish, especially the Welsh Slam Rump served on a sizzler.
The pub also serves a variety of local beers, ales, and gins which are popular with its customers, particularly the Talog Jin. The inn is conscious of the cost of living crisis and although it has faced an increase in cost, in terms of rising bills and cost of goods, it has tried to keep its prices affordable keeping the price rise to minimal amounts.
The Nag’s Head enjoys a rich history and has served as an inn, pub, smithy, and even a courthouse since 1784. And it even has its own unique claim to fame - it's famous for a giant rat that was found and killed by one of its previous owners. The giant rat was later identified as a coypu, a large semi-aquatic rodent which is native to South America.
Though the rat went missing for a few years, its current owners have managed to trace it and get it back to the pub. The Nag’s Head Inn regularly hosts theme nights for the local people and a Christmas roast for the old-age pensioners in the area along with special beer prices for those who live nearby.
The inn is now looking to expand its kitchen and add one or two bed and breakfast rooms. It has already expanded its outside seating and added a canopy to make sure people don’t get wet even when it's raining outside. The Nag’s Head Inn says that its customers will receive a warm Welsh welcome whenever they come.
