With many people across the UK now looking to holiday closer to home as a result of the cost of living crisis, Scotland has seen a surge in popularity among holidaymakers.
According to later living marketplace Lottie, online searches for the term ‘three nights break Scotland’ have increased by 325 per cent over the last year. As the effects of the cost of living crisis continue to be felt, it is likely that this trend of more local holidays will continue into 2023.

Lottie has now released research investigating "several factors crucial to making a holiday unforgettable" such as popularity, affordability, happiness, and wellbeing. Through this, it has revealed the "ultimate" Scottish staycation spots.
According to the research, Haddington in East Lothian is the best place in Scotland for a staycation. Located around 17 miles east of Edinburgh, the town has a population of under 10,000.
Lottie states that online searches for the term ‘Haddington holiday cottages’ have soared by 100 per cent in the last 12 months. The town itself is full of charming cafes and tearooms spread across its historic streets, while nearby landmarks include thirteenth-century house Lennoxlove House and Hailes Castle.
Coming in second place is Stonehaven, well known for its stunning harbour and picturesque coastline. According to Lottie, the town is among the most affordable holiday spots in Scotland, and offers a range of activities to keep you occupied.
Glenrothes, in the east of Scotland, follows in third, and was singled out by Lottie for offering "the perfect balance of affordability and adventure". Located around 30 miles north of Edinburgh, the town is famous for its beautiful landscapes and rich history.
The fourth best Scottish staycation spot according to Lottie is Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire, perhaps best known for its scenic port. Lottie commented: "Our research has revealed Fraserburgh is a great holiday location for affordable living and happiness levels - scoring some of the top scores for affordability and wellbeing - making it the perfect place to discover new adventures and make memories."
North Ayrshire comes in fifth place, and according to Lottie, demand for breaks in the council area has risen by 50 per cent in the last year. It offers not only "open countryside and green moorlands", but also watersports activities for thrill-seekers on its coast.
Rounding out the list in sixth and seventh place are Airdrie and St Andrews. The former "offers the perfect balance of affordability and adventure" for those seeking a balance of relaxation and excitement.
Meanwhile, St Andrews is world famous for its golf, but has plenty more to offer. With its stunning coastline, beautiful beaches, and large variety of outdoor activities, it is no wonder that popularity for the search term 'family holiday St Andrews' has soared by 600 per cent over the past year.
Care Expert and Co-Founder of Lottie Will Donnelly commented: “Our research has found that several coastal locations appear in our list of the top seven best holiday destinations in Scotland - including Haddington - which has been crowned the ultimate location for a break in Scotland.
"We’ve also found the Aberdeenshire towns - Stonehaven and Fraserburgh - are the most affordable holiday destinations in Scotland. Our data has also revealed Glenrothes is up-and-coming with holidaymakers, increasing in popularity in recent years.
