The Super Mario Galaxy Movie might actually be making a years-long fan theory about Rosalina and Princess Peach canon

Princess Peach and Toad in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Despite Nintendo fans often questioning whether Princess Peach and Rosalina are related in Super Mario lore, the games have never established a familial link between the two blond-haired heroes. Thanks to an intriguing new detail on the film's age classification report, though, many are wondering whether the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie might do so...

As pointed out by Kotaku, the animated flick has been rated PG in the UK for "mild violence" and "threat". As the BBFC's rating page points out under the "theme" category, it also includes "infrequent very mild upsetting scenes include flashbacks to the separation of a girl and her younger sister."

Could that be a reference to Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), who resides in Mushroom Kingdom, and Rosalina (Brie Larson), who's set up shop in space? There are scenes in the trailer that glimpse Peach adventuring amongst the stars, so it's not hard to imagine that the film could play host to some sort of emotional reunion.

Also starring the voice talents of Benny Safdie, Jack Black, Charlie Day, and Chris Pratt, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to follow Mario and Luigi as they travel to outer space and team up with the powerful Rosalina to defeat Bowser's vengeful son, Bowser Jr.

A recently-released poster revealed that Wart, a deep-cut Super Mario 2 villain, will be one of the family flick's antagonists – alongside Mouser and Birdo. He'll be played by Wednesday's Luiz Guzmán. Other newly announced names include Issa Rae (as Honey Queen) and Donald Glover (as Yoshi).

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie releases on April 1, 2026. For more, check out our picks of the best video game movies of all time or our guide to all the upcoming video game movies heading our way.
