The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is on track to beat Project Hail Mary for the biggest opening weekend of 2026 so far

Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) in Nintendo and Illumination’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to have the biggest opening weekend of 2026 so far... and we're not surprised.

According to Variety, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is projected to open to $350 million worldwide, beating out Project Hail Mary, which opened to $140 million globally. The Super Mario Bros. Movie opened to a $171 global opening... and ended up grossing $1.3 billion overall.

Per the official logline, the new movie sees Mario and Luigi meet and befriend Yoshi as they team up with Princess Peach and Toad on an adventure that takes them through outer space and all across the galaxy. They eventually meet Rosalina, and together the group faces off against Bowser and his son, Bowser Jr.

The movie (still) stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Luis Guzman as Wart, Issa Rae as the Honey Queen, Donald Glover as Yoshi, and Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina.

It's written by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru) and directed by returning filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. A third one is no doubt on the way, and some fans are theorizing that it might be based on Super Smash Bros (thanks to the appearance of Fox McCloud).

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters on April 1. For everything else coming soon, check out our guide to all the upcoming movies in 2026 and beyond.
