Perched on the edge of Ullswater is one of the Lake District’s most idyllic places to stay. Housed in a converted boathouse, The Duke of Portland is a jaw-droppingly stunning Airbnb where you can wake up to breathtaking views across the water.
The traditional stone-built boathouse has its own private jetty where guests can try a spot of fishing or dip their toes into the water, while a decked balcony is the perfect al-desco dining spot. Sitting in complete isolation with no neighbours, this magical home provides a tranquil stay where you can fully immerse yourself in the gorgeous scenery - although you may find the odd tourist or two admiring this scenic spot.
It regularly features on lists of the best places to stay in the Lake District and it’s easy to see why as both the interior and exterior are equally stunning. Walk through the door and you’ll discover a cosy kitchen and living space with lots of character.

Exposed wooden beams and a wood-burning stove ensure a cosy atmosphere, while a couple of paddles mounted to the beams and a boat-shaped bookcase are quirky touches. The kitchen has everything you would need for your stay and to make meals for two.
The large sofa is perfect for snuggling up after a day spent exploring the local area. Double doors take you through to the bedroom, which has a luxurious king-sized bed and an indulgent free-standing bath.
The bedroom opens up onto the balcony where you can take in the glorious views of Ullswater and the surrounding fells. It’s a lovely spot to enjoy your breakfast or a morning coffee.
With scenery this picturesque it may be hard to pull yourself away from the boathouse, but if you do decide to venture out then there’s lots of things to see and do nearby. Pooley Bridge is within walking distance and it has a selection of bars, cafes and restaurants if you fancy a meal out.
If you’re feeling brave then try paddle boarding further along the shore of the lake near to Ullswater Marina. Five miles away is the spectacular Aira Force, a landscaped Victorian park with awe-inspiring waterfalls and an arboretum.
Naturally the best way to experience the beauty of Ullswater is by hopping on board an Ullswater Steamer. Stopping at Pooley Bridge Pier, Howtown Pier and Glenridding Pier (as well as a separate service to Aira Force), it allows you to fully appreciate the area, and even admire the Airbnb from the water.
Prices start from around £380 per night and the Airbnb sleeps two guests. To book, click here.
