The stats which turned Nottingham Forest midfielder into a 'more complete player'

Nottingham Forest midfielder Orel Mangala feels he has become a “more complete player” as a result of adapting to the challenges of the Premier League.

The 24-year-old linked up with the Reds in the summer, making the move from Stuttgart. He has been in and out of the team over the course of the season - with injuries hampering him somewhat - but has now made 20 appearances for Steve Cooper’s side.

He admits the physicality of English football took some getting used to. However, using data to compare himself with his Forest teammates allowed the Belgian to develop.

“It was a little bit more physical than I expected, but I think I adapted quickly. I don’t think it is a problem now, I am used to it,” said Mangala, ahead of tonight’s clash with Newcastle United.

“With the staff, I watched a lot of videos and compared myself with the other midfielders - how many tackles and interceptions they did. That’s how I could improve.

“That’s how the game is in England. Training is also intense, so that helps with the games. I am quite happy about my development.

“I am now a more complete player in many aspects. Defensively I wasn’t that ready at the start of the season, but now I feel I can do more high-intensity runs now and win more battles. I feel good.

“It’s an exciting time to play for Forest; to be in the Premier League is a good feeling for all of us. I am enjoying my time here.”
