As Britain’s new Prime Minister Liz Truss enters Number 10 today, she has vowed to “deliver on the energy crisis” with a package that could exceed £100 billion. While the exact details are still to be revealed, it looks likely that Ms Truss will move to cap the cost of energy at the current rate of £1,971 for the typical household rather than the £3,549 envisaged for October 1.
This would represent a gigantic intervention in the market, akin to (and more expensive than) the furlough scheme.
