The Secret Netflix: See inside the mansion where Colin Howell confessed his heinous crimes

This is the scrubbed pine family kitchen table that was witness to one of Northern Ireland’s most chilling confessions.

It was here driller killer Colin Howell sat as he finally revealed his dark, murderous heart to the world.

For 10 years the revered Sunday School teacher had bullied wife Kyle Jorgensen into keeping his secret, blackmailing her into thinking she must not utter a word about the killings of Trevor Buchanan and Lesley Howell for the sake of their children – or he would take his own life.

It was only in 2009, and after a string of conflicts, that Howell’s horrors would be made public. On Thursday 28 January of that year, she told him: “Colin, today is the day.”

When he protested, she said: “No, this is the moment.”

Kyle summoned three church elders to their sprawling home and, after bearing witness to the shocking confession, they called police who arrived to arrest the once hugely respected dentist.

The murderer’s mansion on the outskirts of Castlerock, Co Derry, was put up for sale - complete with a fishing lake and seven acres of land - for a knockdown £300,000.

It is also where he hosted prayer meetings and raised his family with second wife, American Kyle.

The money from the sale of the four bedroom, four reception house was expected to be used to compensate victims of Howell’s heinous sex attacks at his Ballymoney dentistry clinic.

The receivers of the property chose a trusted local estate agent.

The £300,000 price tag for the substantial family home and lake could be met by selling a three bedroom semi-detached with a small garden in a prime area of the UK.

The large number of rooms would meet the needs of a larger family and the annex could be used by visitors or older relatives wishing to make the move with children and grandchildren.

Along with all the usual necessities such as decent bedrooms and living space, there are the additional extras that make the home a luxury living space.

In addition to the family bathroom there are two other shower rooms, there is a dressing room, a playroom which is currently set up as a gym and there is also a study and outside there is a garage workshop.

If the property was to be rented out it is estimated it would be able to attract between £900 and a £1,000 a month.

A brochure showcasing the property describes it as a “fantastic family home” with “easy access” to nearby towns and villages.

Nearby Castlerock is where Howell dumped his victims’ bodies in a mock suicide scene.

On the night of 18 to 19 May 1991 – his son’s second birthday – Howell gassed his wife Lesley, 31, and put her in the boot of his estate car.

After driving past a police patrol, he arrived at the home of police officer Trevor Buchanan.

When the house was put on the market a source told Belfast Live: “Howell was bankrupted and a receiver moved in.

“They are gathering his assets to pay his creditors, tax bills, and money for victims and anybody else.”

The sales brochure says the house has “generous electrical specification, wired for sound, UK and American power points throughout” - ideal for Kyle when she lived there before Howell’s bombshell confession.

The description reads: “This magnificent country residence which offers extensive family accommodation is situated on the outskirts of Castlerock with lake and private mature site extending to approximately seven acres.

“It has outstanding sea views and overlooks the surrounding countryside.

“This property offers the potential purchaser a home with well laid out accommodation.”

Howell won’t get a penny of the sale from the property as it was seized along with the rest of his assets.

Earlier this year a former Coleraine mayor suggested the house could be used as a macabre tourist attraction.

The comments were made during a discussion on a neighbour’s planning application.

It has now emerged the Howell house will be changing hands in the future - opening up a range of possibilities for its use.

Belfast Live previously revealed how Howell also lost his half-a-million-pound pension due to the sick sex acts he carried out on drugged patients at his Co Antrim clinic.

Howell - who is currently serving a life sentence - was denied a total of £587,526.27.

A source close to Howell said he had just one regret about confessing to his crimes - trusting Kyle to stand by him.

He believed she would support him when he finally held his hands up to the callous killings, 18 years later.

The 1991 murders were portrayed in controversial drama series, The Secret.
