The most financially devastating scams do not usually begin with an obvious warning sign. They begin with something that looks legitimate, feels reasonable, and moves at a pace that gives the victim a sense of control. By the time the money has moved, the moment for skepticism has already passed.
The financial scale is documented. The FBI recorded 1,008,597 complaints in 2025, with reported losses of nearly $21 billion. Confidence and romance fraud accounted for approximately $929 million of that total. Complaints involving cryptocurrency reported the highest losses, with 181,565 complaints totaling more than $11 billion. The industry is not shrinking. It is industrializing.
