'The Wedding Planner' (Netflix)
"The Wedding Planner" is one of those rom-coms that lands squarely in “so bad it’s good” territory. It kicks off with the usual meet-cute: Type-A wedding planner Mary gets her heel stuck in a storm drain and nearly gets taken out by a runaway garbage truck until she’s rescued at the last second by pediatrician Steve (Matthew McConaughey).
Naturally, sparks fly between them, but things get complicated fast when Mary discovers Steve is actually engaged to one of her clients. To make matters worse, someone else (Justin Chambers) has the hots for her. As straightforward and silly a premise as it is, it's still a delightful watch buoyed by the easy chemistry of two of the era’s most recognizable rom-com stars. Their charm does a lot of the heavy lifting, and so does early-2000s nostalgia.

'Monster-in-Law' (HBO Max)
The biggest draw here is the star-studded cast, particularly the titanic duo Lopez and Jane Fonda make, with Wanda Sykes throwing in plenty of laughs with her sharp one-liners. Given the talent involved, this meet-the-parents romantic comedy feels funnier on paper than in action, but that didn't stop the film from grossing more than three times its budget at the box office despite lukewarm reviews.
When Charlie (Lopez) falls in love with Kevin (Michael Vartan), it at first seems like a match made in heaven. Until she meets her future mother-in-law, Viola (Fonda), a recently fired TV personality who's adamant that no woman could ever be good enough for her precious son. Passive-aggressive comments and pranks start flying with the two locked in a battle of wits that culminates in the movie's most memorable scene: a showdown when Viola shows up in a white dress at her own son's wedding.
