Drivers are being urged to take a look at this list of the latest roadworks to see if their journeys will be affected this week.
We have rounded up all the road closures and roadworks scheduled to take place across the North East. Some routes will be closed while others may have temporary traffic measures.
Our guide covers Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Northumberland, Durham, North Tyneside and South Tyneside. This list is for the week from Monday, May 22, to Sunday, May 28.

Newcastle
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A186 West Road at Hampstead Road. Until May 26
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A186 Mosley Street, Grainger Town, at Dean Street. Until September 29.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A188 Benton Lane at West Farm Avenue. Until June 23.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A193 High Street at Northumberland Street, Wallsend. Until May 30.
No through traffic allowed due to new road layout on Akenside Terrace in both directions from A1058 Jesmond Road to Brandling Court. Until September 10.
Temporary traffic lights due to water main work on Debdon Gardens in South Heaton until May 26.
Traffic taking turns due to telecoms work on Fowberry Crescent at Bolbec Road in Fenham. Until May 30.
No through traffic allowed due to new road layout on Jesmond Dene Road at Grosvenor Road. Until May 2025.
Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on B1600 Stoddart Street, Shieldfield, between Shieldfield Lane and Union Street. Until December 28.
Gateshead
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Cushy Cow Lane, Ryton, from Hexham Old Road to Mullen Drive. Until July 3.
Narrow lanes and speed restriction of 50mph due to major widening works on A1 Western Bypass in both directions from J67 Kingsway South (Coalhouse Roundabout) to A1(M) J65 / A194M Birtley. Work to create an extra lane in each direction. Until May 2025.
Stoneygate Lane in Felling is closed in both directions due to long term roadworks from B1426 Sunderland Road to Stoneygate overnight until July 20.
One lane closed due to roadworks on A694, Swalwell, in both directions between B6317 Shibdon Road and Swalwell Cricket Club. Until May 31.
Birch Road, Blaydon, in both directions closed due to roadworks between Hazel Road and Larch Road. Until September.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Half Fields Road in both directions from Rectory Lane to Gibside View in Winlaton. Between 8am and 4pm Mondays to Sundays until May 25.
Northumberland
A192 Newgate Street, Morpeth, northbound closed due to roadworks from Manchester Street to B6343 Dogger Bank. Until June 1.
B1329, Blyth, in both directions closed due to roadworks from Albert Street to B1328 Bridge Street. Until June 18.
Copper Chare, Morpeth, One Way Street closed due to roadworks from Wellway to The Black and Grey Pub. Until June 14.
Green Lane, Ashington, in both directions closed due to roadworks between Chillingham Crescent and A196 North Seaton Road. Until December.
North Tyneside
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A188 Benton Lane, Longbenton, at West Farm Avenue. Until June 23.
Railway Terrace, North Shields, in both directions closed due to roadworks from Railway Street to Rudyerd Street. Until June 6.
Temporary traffic lights due to long-term roadworks on Liddell Street, North Shields, near Clive Street. Until May 2024.
South Tyneside
None were reported at this time.
Sunderland
- Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A183 Whitburn Road, Seaburn, at Lowry Road (Morrison's roundabout). Until July 31.
Burdon Lane in both directions closed due to roadworks between Woodham Drive (Ryhope, Sunderland) and Burdon Turn-off (Burdon, Sunderland). Construction of the new Ryhope to Doxford Link road. Until August 11.
Easington Street in both directions closed due to roadworks from Sheepfolds North to Wilson Street North. Until September 13.
East View in both directions closed due to telecoms work between Burdon Lane and Forbes Terrace in Ryhope. Until May 31.
Lilian Avenue in both directions closed due to telecoms work from Ralph Avenue to Hewitt Avenue. Until May 23.
Steep Hill, East Herrington, in both directions closed due to roadworks from Summerhill to Hillcrest. Until July 10.
Traffic taking turns due to roadworks on Lonsdale Avenue, Seaburn, in both directions near Weardale Avenue. Until May 23.
County Durham
A19 Northbound closed due to roadworks during the night from A181 (Castle Eden Interchange, Hartlepool) to A182 (Murton Interchange, Seaham). From 8.30pm on May 21 to 6am on May 22.
Cavendish Place, Hobson, in both directions closed due to roadworks at Cawthorne Terrace. Until May 22.
Lancaster Terrace in both directions closed due to telecoms work between Ropery Lane and A167 Park Road South. Until May 24.
Wallnook Lane, Langley Park, in both directions closed due to roadworks between Front Terrace and Firs Terrace. Until December 2024.
