Full list of retailers giving pay rises - including Amazon, Aldi, Asda, Costa, Sainsbury's and M&S

Amazon are the latest company to announce a base pay increase for thousands of workers across the country.

The positive change will come into force in April when minimum wage laws will change following the start of the new financial year. The move follows a range of companies who have confirmed a pay rise for workers.

Companies including Pret a Manger and Costa announced pay rises in recent weeks, avoiding the risk of conflicting with UK-wide minimum living wage rules, with the rate to be increased to £10.42 per hour for over 25s next month.

Amazon's raise will see more than 50,000 employees across the UK benefit, with some workers to be paid £12 an hour based on location.

The rise follows cuts made by Amazon, with the business recently laying off many workers. The online retailer is set to cut a further 9,000 jobs across the world on top of the 18,000 already announced in January.

What companies have confirmed pay rises for workers?

  • Amazon - increase of 50p per hour to £11 per hour from April
  • Aldi - the supermarket confirmed a third pay rise in 12 months to £11.40 per hour
  • Asda - 10 per cent increase from April, with starting rates increasing to £11 an hour and then £11.11 in July
  • Tesco - workers to be given 7 per cent pay rise, in what will be the third increase within ten months
  • Pret A Manger - workers also given third pay rise within a year, increasing to £10.60 per hour
  • Costa - an increase from £10.53 an hour to at least £11.23 per hour from April
  • Sainsbury's/Argos - £10.25 to £11.00 from April - a 38 per cent increase in the last six years
  • Marks and Spencer - £10.20 to £10.90 from April

Following the latest conformation from Amazon, a spokesperson said: "We regularly review our pay to ensure we offer competitive wages, and we’re pleased to be announcing another increase for our UK teams.

"Over the past seven months our minimum pay has risen by 10%, and by more than 37% since 2018.

"We also work hard to provide great benefits, a positive work environment and excellent career opportunities.

"These are just some of the reasons people want to come and work at Amazon, whether it’s their first job, a seasonal role or an opportunity for them to advance their career."
