The remake of “Mean Girls” will premiere on Friday as a teen musical comedy film after 20 years the original film was in theaters.
“Mean Girls” was written by Tina Fey (“Saturday Night Live”) wrote both the original and the remake. She is also the producer along with Lorne Michaels and co-stars in the film.
The teen musical comedy film stars Angourie Rice, Auli’i Cravalho, Renee Rapp, Jaquel Spivey, Avantika, Bebe Wood, Christopher Briney, Jenna Fischer, Busy Phillipps, and Tim Meadows.
Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. are the co-directors of the film. The film executive producers are Jeff Richmond, Nell Benjamin, Eric Gurian, Erin David, and Pamela Thur.
In the new twist by Fey on the modern classic of “Mean Girls”, Cady Heron (Rice) is a new student and welcomed in the top of the social ladder led by popular girls that call themselves “The Plastics” ruled by Regina George (Rapp) and her minions.
Cady falls into a trap as she falls in love with Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Briney). She’s determined to take down the group’s apex predators with the help of her friends Janis (Cravalho) and Damian (Spivey), who are identified as outcasts.
She must learn to stay learn to stay true to who she is while navigating the cutthroat trenches of high school.
The original “Mean Girls” (2004) was a teen comedy film that was directed by Mark Waters that starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Amy Poehler.
The original film was later turned into a sequel in 2011, and then spawned into a Broadway music based on the 2004 film.
Fey then would incorporate the film into a teen musical film spinning off from the Broadway version.
“I think some of it was that lyrically, this is very, very technical Broadway stuff.,” said Fey in her works of the remake of the film. “Lyrically, a lot of What Ifs, I mean, a lot of It Roars, tells us things that we can see in a film.”
“Mean Girls” is produced by Paramount Pictures, Broadway Video, and Little Stranger. It is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America.
This marks the second time Fey has written the “Mean Girls” screenplay as Jayne and Perez took the helm of co-directing the film.
“We talked about how this is really a personalization of the role. On Broadway, it’s so different from the camera being right here,” said Jayne about the remake of the film. “So just making it intimate and making it hers, and I cannot wait for people to see what she did.”
Lohan made an appearance at the New York premiere for the film in a reunion with Fey. The former Saturday Night Live act reprised her role as Ms. Norbury in the film.
