Taylor Swift and her love affair with a signature red lip was forever immortalized in her 1989 track, 'Style' (yes, we're still currently manifesting Style ft. Harry Styles) when she sang "I got that red lip, classic thing that you like"—so have we been on a mission to find the Taylor Swift red lipsticks? Duh.
The discovery of Taylor's go-to lippies actually couldn't come at a better time as 'bare skin and red lip' and 'French Girl' makeup are having quite the renaissance over on TikTok, but the singer/songwriter has already been onto these chic looks for some time. In fact, she's built up quite the collection of statement lipsticks—ranging from orangey hues to her iconic, blue-toned red shade, which she has preferred throughout the Eras tour.
And speaking of the Eras tour, you might have noticed how her red lip didn't budge, despite the torrential rain—especially during her Massachusetts show in May 2023. Well, we've found the fabled lip product she was wearing, plus a few of her other known ride-or-dies from the likes of MAC and Pat McGrath...
Which red lipsticks does Taylor Swift wear?
RRP: $34
'Elson 4' is the very shade Taylor wore in her 'Bejeweled' music video, in fact, Pat McGrath even created a 'Taylor Made' lip kit in collaboration with the singer. Alas, the iconic hue—which is also rumored to be the one she wears for her Eras tour—is out of stock at Sephora, though you can sign up to be notified when it returns and you can still shop it at Selfridges.
RRP: $23
Shade 'Ruby Woo' is also a fave of Taylor's, thanks to its classic, matte, blue-toned red pigment.
RRP: $27
In 2014, Taylor revealed that she loved the shade 'Dragon Girl' in NARS' famous, matte lip pencils.
So, where can we snag the red lipsticks behind Miss Americana's go-to look? While the exact brands she's currently wearing day-to-day remain a mystery, Taylor has gone on the record and shared a few of her faves.
First thing's first though, let's talk about Taylor Swift's Eras lipsticks. It's rumored that the lipstick she wears on stage, which has proven to be pretty indestructible is Pat McGrath's LiquiLUST Legendary Wear Matte Lipstick (the name would definitely suggest that they are one and the same), which she also wore during her 'Bejewelled' music video.
Taking to Instagram, Pat McGrath confirmed that Taylor was indeed wearing the shade 'ELSON 4', to—in the words of Taylor—"make the whole place shimmer."
Another of Taylor Swift's lipstick faves is MAC's Ruby Woo. She confirmed as much to People magazine in 2015, when she said: "I recently discovered Ruby Woo by MAC, which I think everyone knows is a staple. I was the last person to discover it."
NARS' 'Dragon Girl' lip pencil which delivers a red, plum payoff, is also Taylor-approved. In fact, she described it as a shade you 'can't go wrong' with back in 2014 to MTV.
And, in case you were looking to enter your 'Reputation' era, Pat McGrath also offers a few deep burgundy shades in the Matte Trance lipstick range (available at Sephora), similar to the hues Taylor wore for the album.
As for where Taylor's affinity with a red lip began, we really have legendary makeup artist and founder of beauty brand Westman Atelier, Gucci Westman, to thank for it.
Westman recalled Taylor's red lip origin to Elle Australia: "Yeah, I've worked [with Taylor Swift], many times. I haven't worked with her in quite a while but I used to work with her and I remember I was the first one to give her a red lip."
She revealed that it was for her 2009 Allure cover, adding that "she'd never worn a red lip—when the red lip happened, I had to get permission by her mum" after Taylor's management team said the singer didn't do 'red'. Westman went on, "I said, 'Well, Taylor needs to try red," and thus, Taylor's signature look was born. Now 14 years on, Taylor is scarcely seen with her trusty red lipstick.
