The record-breaking numbers behind Nottingham Forest's incredible transfer window

Nottingham Forest’s extraordinary summer window has broken a British record.

The Reds have brought in 21 players, which is a British record for the most signings in a single transfer window. And they may still have one more addition to come.

Full-back Serge Aurier is expected to become Forest’s 22nd new arrival. The defender is a free agent, having left Villarreal, so his deal could be concluded after Thursday’s deadline.

According to Transfermarkt, the previous British record for number of signings made in a single window was 19. Dundee United brought in that many in 2000, with Livingston following suit in 2001.

Prior to the Reds’ shopping spree, Crystal Palace had held the English record. They made 17 in the summer of 2013, according to BBC Sport.

Three players arrived at the City Ground on deadline day. Defenders Willy Boly and Loic Bade have linked up with Steve Cooper’s squad, with winger Josh Bowler agreeing terms and then heading on loan to fellow Evangelos Marinakis-owned side Olympiacos.

An overhaul of the dressing room was always going to be necessary following the end of last season, both to strengthen and to cater for a number of departures. Other players also left throughout the summer, making for a “unique” window, in Cooper’s words.

“It’s been a fairly unique summer, in terms of the turnaround - players coming in,” he has said. “It was always going to be a unique challenge with the numbers, then added to getting promotion and a different level of player that you have to look at. We’ve embraced that.”

Forest incomings: Taiwo Awoniyi, Dean Henderson, Giulian Biancone, Moussa Niakhate, Omar Richards, Neco Williams, Wayne Hennessey, Brandon Aguilera, Harry Toffolo, Lewis O'Brien, Jesse Lingard, Orel Mangala, Emmanuel Dennis, Cheikhou Kouyate, Remo Freuler, Morgan Gibbs-White, Hwang Ui-jo, Renan Lodi, Willy Boly, Josh Bowler, Loic Bady.

Forest outgoings: Tobias Figueiredo, Gaetan Bong, Carl Jenkinson and Lewis Grabban left at the end of their contracts; Mohamed Drager, Ethan Horvath, Braian Ojeda, Richie Laryea and Alex Mighten have gone on loan, as have new signings Aguilera, Ui-jo and Bowler; Brice Samba, Nicholas Ioannou, Xande Silva, Nuno Da Costa and Joe Lolley departed on permanent deals, as did youngster Jayden Richardson; youngsters Will Swan, Tyrese Fornah, Jonathan Panzo, Fin Back, Riley Harbottle and Nicky Hogarth have gone on loan; loanees Djed Spence, Keinan Davis, Philip Zinckernagel, Max Lowe and James Garner returned to their parent clubs at the end of last term.
