Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee on February 6 2022.
To celebrate 70 years on the throne, events will be taking place across the country, including a four day bank holiday weekend from Thursday June 2 to Sunday June 5.
The Queen turned 96 in April and has been commended for still carrying out public duties at her age.
Though there are celebrations planned for June to mark the occasion, February 6 is the official date that marks the 70th anniversary the Queen ascended the throne.
This was following the death of her father, King George VI, on the same date in 1952. She was months away from her 26th birthday when the King passed away, making her a Queen at just 25 years old.
At the time of the event, Queen Elizabeth II was on a state visit with her husband, Prince Philip, in Kenya. She and her late husband had been married for just five years at the time, and were due to continue onwards to Australia and New Zealand.
She and Prince Philip were standing in for King George VI who, despite being just 56 years old, was too ill to go on the trip.
At the time of her father's death, the then-princess was at the Treetops Hotel, surrounded by wild animals in Nyeri, Kenya.
While she ascended the throne in February, it was not until over a year later on June 2 1953 that the Queen was coronated.
The special event took place at Westminster Abbey, London, where her grandson Prince William married Kate Middleton in 2011.
Age and two birthdays
Queen Elizabeth II turned 96 on April, 21, 2022. She was born on April 21 in 1926, but has two birthdays.
One is on the actual date of her birth, while the other is always on the second Saturday of June each year.
The June birthday is the official celebration, and royals having two birthdays is a tradition that began in 1901.
